The University as an Approach to Raising University Students Awareness of the Effects of Climate Change on the Environment

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the role of the university in raising university students' awareness of the effects of climate change on the environment. The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach and included a sample of 112 students from Fujairah University, who were randomly selected from all university faculties using a questionnaire tool. The study was based on several theories, including Social Construction Theory, Social Conflict Theory, Social Exchange Theory, and Social Identity Theory. Previous studies have emphasized the role of curricula in achieving environmental security and the future vision of educational trends by activating the educational role in ensuring environmental security in the context of global climate change. The study results, from the perspective of the sample, revealed the university's role in enhancing students' knowledge and attitudes regarding the effects of climate change on the environment. It also highlighted the university’s contribution to building a more environmentally aware generation through cooperation with non-governmental organizations working in the environmental field. Additionally, the university plays a role in developing programs and activities to address climate change. The study presented suggestions to enhance university students' awareness of climate change effects on the environment. The research concluded with practical recommendations, including increasing universities’ focus on developing curricula to incorporate climate change topics and their environmental impacts, providing specialized training programs in environmental and climate change fields, intensifying practical environmental activities through awareness campaigns and volunteer work, and strengthening collaboration with local and international environmental organizations to implement joint programs aimed at raising students'
