Abstract

This research aims to equip families of children with autism spectrum disorder to train their children in natural environments, as well as to explore parental strategies to support their children's participation. Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder, aged 5-6 and 10-11 years, participated in a study using the Children's and Youth Participation and Environment Measure. This research reports on the perceived support, barriers, and resources in the home and community environments. Parents reported the strategies they used to support their children's participation at home and in the community. Parents identified home environmental factors as more supportive for younger children. Sensory qualities of activities and social demands were identified as factors that make community participation more difficult for both groups. Parents used a variety of strategies at home and in the community to support their children's participation. Equipping families with children on the autism spectrum to train their children in natural environments can be achieved by identifying environmental barriers and supports for participation. This can help develop interventions to support meaningful participation in activities for children with autism spectrum disorder.
